House of Art!!
Cairns newest artist venue launches this week with a diverse and colourful opening program.
Arthouse, formally the old Hrvastki Klub, will introduce Cairns' punters to a dynamic artist run space, with a focus on creative development and experimentation.
The actual building is a classic old fibro cottage on a large industrial block, and was bought by the local Croation community in the 1990's, and converted into their clubhouse.
With a new name and outlook, this classic environment is perfect for a mix of indoor and outdoor performances, films and music, and this Saturday's opening is a taste of what's to come.
Media artist File_Error, says of the space: "it's a quintessential North Qld venue, a mix of kooky old world charm, semi-industrial ambience, and back-yard suburban folly. It's a very unique venue for Cairns, and worlds away from the gloss of the CBD."
"Arthouse, it's a space for artists"
The Arthouse opening features a program of short films, contemporary performances, visual arts and installation, music and DJ culture with guests including DJ's Anton, Dizaster and No_Request, performances by Cairns Pan Stars, Art Doom v's Font and Nigel Perera, and visual media from Kronik and File_Error.
DJ's Anton, Dizaster and No_Request will be playing everything from funk & soul to world beat and gypsy, to Electro Swing.
There will be performance by the steel drum troupe Cairns Pan Stars, while quirky music duo Art Doom will accompany physical theatre and circus star Font in a strange mix of b=grade horror music, balancing and mime, while Nigel Perera will present his unique processed bass guitar and electronics performance.
Arthouse will also screen a series of short films from the global Oneness project with a focus on sustainable food systems.
A highlight of the night will be graffiti artist Kronik (aka Wally), who will paint a large solo graf piece on the side of old school bus. Kronik is a well-known across Cairns for his dynamic public artworks and murals, and the bus will provide a unique canvas to develop a new work.
Arthouse opens this Saturday 19th February, at 240 Scott St (via McCoombe st). Doors at 6.00pm, films from 7.00pm, and show from 8.00pm. Tickets are $7 / 5 concession at the door.
