The Mod Cons - A Brief Biography
Ade, Rob and Kim formed a band to play music together.
The conception of The Mod Cons coincided with that of the MOFO Friday night live music sessions and soon they could be found as the resident dodgy old covers band occupying the graveyard shift after the more serious bands had finished for the evening. Originally billed as "The Band That Shall Not Be Named", they eventually settled on "The Mod Cons" moniker despite harbouring no particular affection for either The Jam or the associated English youth subculture of the 1960s and only after the much-preferred "Cairns Most Shit Covers Band" title was deemed already taken. Initially eager to shake off the financially lucrative yet morally bankrupt cover band tag in favour of the "hey we're cool" but just plain bankrupt original band tag, The Mod Cons convened and considered their options. Rumours abound resultant extensive embryonic original demo material exists and that the band are just too damned lazy to do the necessary spade work to go where the grass may or may not be greener and where a skerrick of credibility may be in the offing. The band's manager, Calculus Entropy, refuses to neither confirm nor deny such rumours, but when pushed on the subject has stated:
"Ade, Rob and Kim have considered revisiting their own original material and subjecting their MOFO public to it, but being ones to always go for the low-hanging fruit, they regularly retreat into the safety of covering songs covered by bands covering the songs of other bands in the knowledge that a genuine commitment to original music would necessitate a relocation to Melbourne like any other band serious about their craft. That and the fact that they're too old and their music is crap."
And so The Mod Cons can occasionally be found treading the boards and applying their treatment to the music of others on any given evening at MOFO.
