Tommy See Poy
Latin Band
Tom comes from a musical family whose reputation spans 3 generations. His grandfather, Herbert, a saxophonist entertained U.S. troops post W.W.II. His father, Junior also a saxophonist, is an active member of the Far North Jazz scene today.
Leaving North Queensland to further his studies, Toms journey lead to Sydney were he paid his dues by playing club gigs and backing shows. Playing gigs, private tuition and hours of practice was a way of life. Toms appetite for Jazz was well fed with private tuition from some of the countrys leading exponents. During this time, Tom performed at many Jazz concerts and festivals and has shared the stage with James Morrison, Tommy Emanuel, Don Burrows, Johnny Nicole and Jazz group Galapagos Duck to name a few. An offer to join the Duck shows the level of respect that Tom had grown to enjoy but the offer was respectfully declined.
The Cairns lifestyle was too good to pass up. Tom refined his arranging and writing skills and as bandleader, spearheaded some of the finest combos in the area. Offers to travel overseas soon materialized and after stints back in Sydney and the Whitsunday Islands Tom entered the International arena with Singapore the first port of call.
Playing in 5 star hotels throughout Asia, gave Tom the opportunity to hear first hand some of worlds most awesome talents. Jam sessions and hanging out with people like Harry Conick Jnr., Winton Marsalis, Kenny Barron, Hank Jones, Gene Harris, all Giants of Jazz, was a period that would heighten Toms senses and shape his mind as a mature musician.
Wherever he travelled, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Tom was called by local agencies for recording sessions and T.V. shows.
Returning to Cairns Tom established Entertainment Zone a musical services company that provides bands and entertainers to the local area. Our services include bookings for solo musicians, large groups, writing and arranging services, tuition for piano, percussion and singing, recording studio facilities and music consultancy.
Tom leads the popular Latin/Jazz group the LatinJazzExcursion, performs regularly as a solo jazz artist and for the past 5 years has been on the music faculty of the TNQ TAFE College.
