CYCAS Circus is the Far North's professional youth school circus troupe. The troupe of 25 was formed in 2004 by founder and director, Patti Burnheim. The students incorporate circus, drama and dance skills with lights, costume and sound to create unique performances. Trained by local professionals in weekly workshops and daily rehearsals, the students are developing circus and acrobalance skills, along with building self-confidence and team work.
CYCAS Circus performs over eighty shows in the community each year for council events, school events and fetes, local and national festivals and private functions. At present the circus performs monthly on the Esplanade for the Cairn Regional Council Foreshore Fire nights. They also provide workshops at Active After School Care and Vacation Care centres. The youth troupe is highly regarded in the community as 'ordinary kids doing extraordinary things'. They have recently added aerial to their performances as another dimension of circus arts to entertain and involve the community.
Their performances and workshops incorporate circus skills including stilt walking, unicycling, diabolos, poi, plates, fire twirling, juggling, hula hoops, acrobalance, clowning, aerial and much more. Their aim is to educate, inform and inspire youth to accomplish something positive for themselves, while creating an interactive experience that encourages young people to value team spirit and appreciate a love for physical activity. The troupe brings students of all ages, sizes and abilities together, enhancing their growth and development physically, mentally, emotionally and socially.
CYCAS travelled to WA in 2007 for the Western Australia Circus Festival where they took part in training workshops and performances with national and international artists. In 2008 they trained with renowned professionals at the UberOz Festival in Brisbane and hosted a three week intensive aerial workshop in Cairns.
They are presently touring locally with their performances and taking bookings for functions, fetes and workshops. All proceeds go towards expenses for the yearly festivals.
|Our major influences have been from Cirque Du Soleil and Circus Smirkus, a professional youth troupe in America. We spend endless hours studying their works to get innovative ideas for our own shows.
|Our highlights include fire dancing, choregraphed LED performances, the german wheel, juggling cube, trapeze, silks and most recently, the flying trapeze.
