Gentle instrumental music performed on flute with my own keyboard accompaniments. No voices, no violence. Enormous repertoire. I have added a Soundcloud link. Thanks for listening.

My name is Don MacGregor and I am a fortunate man. It is a privilege to play for you.

Growing up in a small town on Vancouver Island, Canada, I learned my love for music from my mother's record collection and the radio sounds of mid-1960s North America. Favourites from record, like Nat King Cole, Brook Benton, Perry Como and Mario Lanza, along with newer sounds from AM radio accompanied my daily play sessions and at a young age I asked for music lessons.

Limited choices in music teachers meant that I was steered towards choral singing where I found melody. I began a varied professional career in 1982 and have been finding my way with the music ever since.

After teaching myself the rudiments and performing on many instruments including flute, trumpet, marimba, vibraphone keyboard and voice, I settled on flute as my primary instrument. I also learned that I tend to think like a singer and that my set lists invariably feature songs from several eras that are in essence songs written with strong, memorable melodies.

In 1997, not long after my 40th birthday, I decided to leave Canada in search of a new life where I could make my living in music year-round. After a wonderful time in New Zealand, that search brought me to Cairns in 1998 and almost against my will, circumstances combined to keep me here. That was a very good thing.

I began a long-standing series of regular gigs at resort hotels including The Marriott in Palm Cove, The Reef House Palm Cove, Thala Beach Lodge, Sea Temple Port Douglas, Cairns International Hotel as well as occasional performances at most of the larger hotels in the area. Ten years of playing Sunday markets in Port Douglas helped me sell a truck load of CDs, all recorded in Cairns with Nigel Pegrum, accompanied by guitar virtuoso Wayne McIntosh and my own keyboard backgrounds.

The GFC changed everything for all of us and as the gigs dried up and CDs gave way to MP3, I needed to change my presentation to suit the times. I began taking a small PA to the Cairns Esplanade to perform for people as a busker. I have loved the venue and the people. It's never dull. I always feel that if my music can make a difference for at least one person each night, then I have done my job and the money will follow. So far so good.

These days, as well as performing on the Cairns waterfront I'm back playing hotels and am a regular feature at Limberlost Garden Centre for Sunday afternoons and Friday evenings at the fabulous Reef House boutique hotel in Palm Cove. I am as comfortable performing for a family picnic as I am on a festival stage or in the dining room of a five star hotel. If there's something you think I might know that I could play for you, please ask.
