I have had a long association with North Queensland since first moving to Cairns as a young ‘bank johnny’ in 1969. That initial 3 year stint had a lasting impression and I finally moved back permanently in 1990 after attending art college at the Queensland College of Art as a mature age student in the late 1970’s. Initial training was as a painter and printmaker though I had dabbled with jewelry design. Early solo exhibitions were primarily painting focussed but I had ‘knocked about’ with collegues who were producing painted sculptures and since moving back to the north started experimenting with 3d painted wood forms. Current sculptural work usually incorporates a variety of materials with wood and high density pvc being the primary material. I have produced work for over twenty five solo exhibitions since 1985 and from 2003-2006 a survey exhibition of sculptural works, ‘From a Garden Somewhere’ toured Queensland regional galleries. My painting and sculptures are primarily a synthesis of form, light and colour as observed in his own garden, forests or botanical gardens. A very early exhibition was titled ‘Colour, Leaves, Light’ and those fundamentals have remained a constant in my exhibition work. In the not too distant past when funding for public art work was more strongly supported by government bodies and policies, I completed over twenty public commissions across Queensland since my first public art commission for the Cairns Convention Centre in 1996. |
