**Band competition review**
The one duo of the evening, Small Bird seemed to be more like a bird of prey, as it was hard to believe the music coming from the stage was being produced by only two musos. The male and female harmonies danced around each other perfectly, and were married well by the accompanying acoustic guitar and stomp box. Also married well were both the members of Small Bird, who declared themselves a married couple, before they declared (jokingly) that they felt this wasn’t very rock n’ roll. But hey, look at Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham; they put out some of their best stuff when they were married. This could be why the two musos had such great chemistry onstage while performing the (mainly original) material. One highlight of the set though, was a show stopping cover of Lorde’s ‘Royals’, which will now make me rethink the original. While most of the material was mellow in nature, Small Bird still had the feel of a full symphonic style rock band. Think Smashing Pumpkins, but without the ego. No doubt a reviewer has said it before, but here goes anyway; Small Bird: Big Sound.
