Well-known keyboard man, Tommy See Poy, has been thrilling audience in and around Cairns for over two decades. After spending several years in Sydney in the early eighties, he headed overseas to perform in some of the finest hotels in Asia. Well received in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, Tommy headed to Seoul on the South Korean peninsula where he performed with some of the finest musicians on the planet. Since returning to North Queensland in the late 90’s, he has reestablished his reputation for excellence in Jazz piano performance. Tommy attracts the finest musicians Cairns has to offer as is evident in his 10 year residency at the Cairns Casino on Thursday nights, where he leads the exciting Latin-Jazz Excursion, now resident every Thursday at the iconic Latin nights at the Pier Bar, Cairns.
As a soloist, he manages to find a path, that is all his own. Mastery of the instrument with understated command and respect for the moment, Tommy offers an experience hard to pass up. Tommy’s passion for improvised music threads its way into the tapestry of his repertoire as he weaves his way through Jazz, Latin, R&B or reworked pop tunes.
His vocal prowess is the topping on a very appetising harmonic background, rhythmically and masterfully crafted to provide the complete package that is Tommy.
Recent collaborations with singing star, Wilma Reading has brought the pianist back to the standards, with an appearance at Melbourne’s premier Jazz club, Bennett’s lane. Well received and asked back to play at the Melbourne’s Stonnington Jazz festival is a strong testament to the duos acceptance in Australian Jazz circles.
As an accompanist, Tommy See Poy is sort after by southern and International artist touring the Far North Queensland region. These include, Tom Burlinson from the movie, the Man From Snowy River, Peter Cupples and the Rat Pack Show from Las Vegas.
Always willing to share the wealth of information through education, Tommy has spent 9 years on the faculty of TAFE NQ. And gives private lessons to budding musicians in the Cairns region. Tommy also Lectures at the Central Queensland University, Mackay
